Science, Singing and Sax: The Science behind the Music

Presenters: John Rayner, with Theresa Rayner and Niels Rosendahl

How can a soprano’s voice soar above a full orchestra?  Why does a clarinet sound different to an oboe?  What’s the difference between harmony and discord?  What is sound?  In this talk, Dr Rayner, Adjunct Professor of Physics, Engineering and Science Communication at the University of Canberra, and a Visiting Fellow in the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science at the ANU, will try to answer such questions, as he explores the science of musical instruments, including the voice, using a variety of practical demonstrations and visualisation software.  Theresa, as a successful opera singer and teacher, and Niels as a noted jazz saxophone player, will illustrate the talk with vocal and instrumental examples.
