The shores of Lake Como are the setting for Manzoni’s novel I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed), a masterpiece of Italian as well as world literature, first published in 1828. In this Talk John Maneschi will explore the historical, romantic and religious aspects of the work, and the life and times of its Milanese author (sometimes known as ‘the Italian Walter Scott’) as well as examples of his poetry.
