Ruth Henderson, who has long been fascinated by the history and politics of medieval England, says she could talk for hours about Anne Boleyn but has agreed to limit herself on this occasion to forty minutes or so. Henry VIII’s need for Anne to become his second wife was the catalyst for England’s split with the Church of Rome. Was Anne herself a religious reformer? Or, as Catherine of Aragon described her, “the greatest whore in Europe”?
